It is also known as the median diameter or the medium value of the particle size distribution, it is the value of the particle diameter at 50% in the cumulative distribution. It is one of an important parameter for representing particle size. For example, if D50=5.8 micrometer, then 50% of the particles in the sample are larger than 5.8 micrometer, and 50% smaller than 5.8 micrometer.

AS-2011 laser particle size analyzer works on basis of laser diffraction theory, that is determine the size of particles by interaction between light and particles and diffraction law of particle to the light, it is the Mie scattering theory. Put in simple terms, rectilinear propagation of light in transparent medium is changed in case of there is particle, liquid or gas bubble in the medium, the light will change its direction and be scattered in all directions, it is closely involved with the size of the particles, when a parallel monochromatic light illuminate spherical particles, there is a Airy disc at the back of the particles and the distribution of such disc is in closed relation with the particle size. For bigger particles, the first shining circle is close to the center, for smaller ones, the first is far from the center. AS-2011 completely works on basis of Mie scattering theory.
